Are You Happy?

We seem to create more and more to do in what feels like less and less time. In fact we tell ourselves we should be doing more with our lives as if that is the only way to find true happiness.

You can do anything you want but you can't do everything you want.

I think the reason a lot of people feel that they don't have time to live their lives is that they are not truly in charge of their lives. And to be truly in charge of your life you have to begin to live in the present moment.

In the now as they say!

Which is in fact all we have - now, now, now - our lives are a series of in-the-moment events that we choose or choose not to participate in here and now.

Our problems begin when we find ourselves living either tied to past events or worrying and creating uncertainy about the future

You can only ever be in the present moment.

If you can be in the moment when you are at work, at home, with your kids, with your partner, with your friends you will experience the true joy of being.

People who do their work and live their life with passion and joy tend to spend most of their time in the present moment.

A great way to practice being, with other people, is to open up to be of service and to be consciously giving - at work, as a parent, as a partner, as a friend, as a driver, as a shopper, as a lover - in every area of your life you have an opportunity to be present, to give and see more of who you really are. The more you consciously give to others the more you will receive - in abundance.

Your workplace in particular defines you in a way that enables you (if you choose) to see more of who you really are. What that means is being at work offers challenges and interactions with people that will take you to the edge of your comfort zone. At that point you will feel very present and in the moment. If you become aware of yourself at that moment you will have an opportunity to see if how you are being is serving you and others.

And it's all about you simply noticing how and who you are being. Are you being someone who enjoys being around others who attracts others to them or are you being someone who fears unknown events and feels scared to be with others. There is no right or wrong way to be, but noticing brings you into the present moment and you will know if you are being true to yourself or if you are simply doing what others expect of you.

A question for you -

  • How many of you right now are experiencing pmt?
  • If you're not, you should be!
  • Pmt stands for present moment thinking.

How many of you (and you need to be honest with yourself) know that you spend a lot of your waking time in your head either at the effect of events in your past or worrying about events in the future?

If that is true for you (and I don't know anyone for whom that isn't true at least some of the time), then you are not able to be in the present moment. The only time and place you can be happy is now, not later when you hope to be living in the right house, driving the right car, going on the right holidays, wearing the right clothes. If your happiness is future facing, you'll never get there.

When you think in that way you are giving away your own power to be happy - now!

This notion of work/life balance suggests that when you are at work you are not living your ideal life. (it should be known as 'worklife/homelife balance). What I'm suggesting is being at work is a great arena for working on yourself and to push yourself to and beyond the edge of your comfort zone. If you are living consciously you will be in the present moment, the only place to be to see your success and happiness.

A lot of people live their lives not daring to consider that right now is the perfect place to be truly happy.

The challenge is to be aware that whatever your predicament, however much you feel you are suffering, it is all entirely perfect, it is as it should be to enable you to wake up and be present.

The thing is we all know this to be true. Look at Shakespeare's most famous quote, "to be or not to be, that is the question". If you think that your happiness is based on what you do rather just being, you are looking in the wrong direction. Doing is great if you are doing it joyfully, creatively, happily. Look to see if you are presently being of service in your work, at home, with friends.

What would that look like if you put others first?

Happiness is within you now, in the present moment, happiness is not without you and you are not without happiness. It's just a question of which direction you are looking in.
The great thing there is always now to keep being reminded.

So what are you doing in your life to be happy (I'm not talking about what do you find pleasurable or what do you enjoy doing).

And why is it that when you grow to adulthood, maybe having gained degrees and qualifications in all walks of life, created relationships, families, lifestyles - all the things you're told and are led to believe will make you happy and content - why might you think 'is this it?' - it's because you are looking outside of you for your happiness - look within and be.

2 ways to develop your awareness - one is around doing and one is around being.

The doing exercise is to make a simple agreement with yourself - so as to practice doing what you say you are going to do.

To make it work it needs to be simple and attainable. It's about doing it no matter what, not how good you will look if you do or beating yourself up if you don't.

So for example your agreement might be to make your bed every day, hug your partner or kids every day, be on time, pick up 10 pieces of litter etc . . . It only needs to be one agreement so be creative.

You will notice that whatever agreement you come up with you will always get to practice being of service even if it's to yourself. Share your agreement with others and support each other. Keep your agreement every day for 2 weeks, then review how you did, or didn't do, no judgement, just notice.

The being exercise is simply to sit for 10 minutes undisturbed and focus on your breath, gentle natural unforced breathing. You will begin to notice how busy and chaotic your mind is. As you become aware of your thoughts simply accept them and let them go. Return back to your breathing. Practice this every day and you will begin to still your mind, become clear and focused and experience the simplest way of being present and content. Practice at home or together at work before you start work. You will be amazed at how connected you will feel with your colleagues and how focused you will be on the day ahead.

Agree to this process for 14 days. Whether you think you can or you can't, either way, you will be right!
